Why Grout Coverage Varies So Much

There's no single number that tells you "one bag covers X square feet," because grout coverage depends on four variables working together:

• Tile size — Larger tiles have fewer grout joints per square foot, so a bag stretches much further. A wall of 12x24 tile needs a fraction of the grout that the same wall in 1x1 mosaics would need.
• Joint width — This is the single biggest factor. Going from a 1/16" joint to a 1/8" joint can roughly double the amount of grout consumed, since you're filling a wider channel.
• Grout joint depth — Thicker tile (like most natural stone or 3/8" thick porcelain) has a deeper joint to fill than thin glass or ceramic subway tile.
• Grout type — Different grout formulas have different densities and mixing ratios, so they don't yield identical coverage even in an identical joint.

Unsanded grout is the right call any time the joint is 1/8" or narrower, or when you're working with a tile that scratches easily, such as polished stone or glass. It goes on smoother than sanded grout and is easier to tool into tight, vertical joints without dragging or pulling.

How to Estimate Your Grout Needs Before You Order

Follow these steps to land on an accurate order quantity:

1. Measure your square footage. Multiply the length and width of each surface you're tiling and add them together.
2. Confirm your tile size and joint width. Your tile spec sheet or the product page will list the tile dimensions; your installer or design plan determines the joint width.
3. Find your row and column on the matching chart above. Locate your tile size in the left-hand column and your joint width across the top.
4. Divide your total square footage by the coverage number. The result tells you how many bags or boxes to order.
5. Round up and add a buffer. Add 10–15% to your total to account for cuts, waste, and future repairs, and so your leftover grout can be used for touch-ups down the road.
