What Is MAPEI Ultracolor Plus FA?

MAPEI Ultracolor Plus FA is a high-performance, rapid-setting cement grout designed for a wide range of residential and commercial tile installations.

FA stands for Fine Aggregate.

One of the biggest advantages of Ultracolor Plus FA is its versatility.

It is designed for grout joints from 1/16 inch through 3/4 inch, allowing one grout system to cover many installations that traditionally might have required choosing between separate sanded and unsanded grout products.

At BELK Tile, we carry MAPEI Ultracolor Plus FA in a growing selection of colors so you can coordinate the grout with the tile rather than treating grout as an afterthought.

Why Choose MAPEI Ultracolor Plus FA?

I like Ultracolor Plus FA for customers and installers who want a high-performance cement grout without moving to a two-component epoxy system.

It combines several characteristics that make it useful across a wide range of tile projects.

It is rapid setting.

It provides strong stain resistance.

It is formulated for consistent color.

It is designed to resist efflorescence.

Its fine aggregate formulation works across a broad grout-joint range.

And routine penetrating grout sealer is typically not required.

That combination makes Ultracolor Plus FA a practical choice for kitchens, bathrooms, floors, walls, mosaics and other approved tile installations.

MAPEI Ultracolor Plus FA Is an All-in-One Grout

One of the most useful things about Ultracolor Plus FA is that you do not have to begin with the traditional question of whether you need sanded or unsanded grout.

Its fine aggregate formulation is designed for grout joints from 1/16 inch to 3/4 inch.

That range gives installers considerable flexibility across different tile formats.

A project might include a small mosaic in one area, subway tile in another and larger porcelain field tile elsewhere.

Ultracolor Plus FA can simplify grout selection across those different formats when the product is appropriate for the tile and installation.

You should still verify compatibility with the particular tile surface, especially when working with sensitive natural stone, polished surfaces or specialty glass.

Does MAPEI Ultracolor Plus FA Need to Be Sealed?

MAPEI states that sealer is typically not required for Ultracolor Plus FA.

That is an important distinction because many homeowners still assume every cement grout automatically needs to be sealed.

Ultracolor Plus FA is formulated for high stain resistance and reduced surface absorption.

That does not mean the tile surrounding the grout has the same requirements.

Marble, limestone and other natural stones may require or benefit from sealing depending on the stone, finish and installation.

Treat the grout and the tile as separate materials when determining sealing and maintenance requirements.

Choosing a MAPEI Ultracolor Plus FA Grout Color

MAPEI offers Ultracolor Plus FA in a broad range of grout colors, giving you options from light neutrals and warm tones to grays and darker shades.

I would choose the color based on what you want the grout to do visually.

You generally have three approaches:

Match the tile.

Complement the tile.

Contrast with the tile.

Each creates a noticeably different finished installation.

Matching the Grout to the Tile

Choosing a grout color close to the dominant tile color creates a more continuous appearance.

This approach works especially well when the tile itself has strong color, veining, texture or movement.

With marble, for example, a closely coordinated grout can allow the natural stone to receive more attention.

With glass mosaics, matching grout can soften a busy pattern.

Complementing the Tile

The grout does not need to match the tile exactly.

A complementary color can connect the tile with other materials in the room.

A warm neutral might coordinate cream tile with wood cabinetry.

A soft gray might connect white marble with stainless steel or brushed nickel.

A greige can bridge warm and cool finishes.

This is often the approach I prefer when you want the grout visible without making it the focal point.

Contrasting With the Tile

Contrasting grout emphasizes the tile shape and layout.

White subway tile with charcoal or black grout creates a much stronger graphic pattern than the same tile with white or light neutral grout.

Hexagon, penny round, herringbone and other mosaics also become more defined as grout contrast increases.

There is one tradeoff.

The stronger the contrast, the more visible the grout joints and installation alignment become.

Light MAPEI Grout Colors

Light grout colors can create a clean, subtle installation and work particularly well with white, cream and lightly colored tile.

They can also reduce the visual impact of grout joints when paired with similarly colored tile.

Do not assume every light grout looks the same.

Some lean warm.

Others lean cooler or more gray.

Compare the grout with the actual tile, cabinetry, countertop and lighting whenever color coordination is important.

Gray MAPEI Grout Colors

Gray is one of the most versatile grout directions because it can work with white, black, blue, green, marble, concrete-look porcelain and many other surfaces.

A lighter gray gives the tile some definition without creating an aggressive contrast.

Medium and darker grays make the tile pattern progressively more visible.

Gray can also be useful when pure white grout feels too bright for the overall design.

Warm Neutral MAPEI Grout Colors

Cream, beige, almond, taupe and other warm neutrals work well with natural stone, warm white tile, travertine-inspired porcelain, wood cabinetry and earth-tone interiors.

These colors can be especially useful when gray grout makes a room feel too cool.

When working with marble or other natural stone, evaluate the undertones in the stone rather than selecting grout based only on the color name.

Dark MAPEI Grout Colors

Charcoal, black and other darker grout colors create more definition.

They can blend into dark tile or provide intentional contrast against lighter surfaces.

Dark grout is especially effective when the tile pattern is part of the design.

Subway tile, hexagon and geometric mosaics can look dramatically different when their joints are clearly defined.

With light tile, remember that strong contrast also makes variations in grout-joint width and alignment easier to see.

Do Not Choose Grout Color From the Name Alone

Grout names are helpful for narrowing the choices, but they cannot tell you exactly how a color will appear in your room.

Lighting changes color perception.

The tile changes it.

Nearby countertops, cabinets and paint colors change it.

Even two neutral grouts that sound similar can produce noticeably different results beside the same tile.

Whenever the grout color is an important part of the design, compare it with the actual tile and a physical MAPEI color reference when possible.

MAPEI Ultracolor Plus FA for Kitchen Backsplashes

Kitchen backsplashes are a good application for Ultracolor Plus FA because grout in this area can be exposed to food residue, oils, splatter and frequent cleaning.

Stain resistance therefore matters.

Color matters just as much.

With subway tile, contrasting grout can emphasize the pattern.

With decorative mosaics, a closer color relationship may allow the tile to remain the focal point.

With marble, the grout can either blend with the background stone or coordinate with its veining.

Browse kitchen backsplash tile when planning the complete installation.

MAPEI Ultracolor Plus FA for Showers

Ultracolor Plus FA can be used in appropriate wet-area installations when installed according to MAPEI's requirements.

Its stain resistance, color consistency and reduced surface absorption make it a useful option for bathroom and shower projects.

There is one important distinction I always make:

Grout does not waterproof a shower.

The waterproofing system belongs behind the finished tile installation.

Whether you use Ultracolor Plus FA, epoxy grout or another appropriate grout, the shower itself needs to be properly waterproofed before the grout becomes part of the finished surface.

MAPEI Ultracolor Plus FA for Shower Floors

Shower-floor mosaics contain a large number of grout joints, which makes the grout a significant part of the finished floor.

Color therefore deserves careful consideration.

A grout color close to the mosaic can make the surface feel more continuous.

Contrasting grout emphasizes every individual piece.

The tile itself must still be appropriate for shower-floor use, and the substrate needs the correct slope, drainage and waterproofing beneath the tile.

Browse shower floor tile when wet-floor suitability is your primary tile requirement.

MAPEI Ultracolor Plus FA for Mosaic Tile

Ultracolor Plus FA works across a wide grout-joint range, making it useful for many compatible mosaic installations.

Mosaics also make grout unusually important from a design standpoint.

A large-format tile may have relatively little visible grout.

Penny round, hexagon, basketweave, pebble and other mosaics can contain grout across a much larger percentage of the finished surface.

That means the grout color can substantially change the appearance of the mosaic.

I recommend selecting the grout while selecting the tile rather than waiting until installation day.

Browse mosaic tile to compare different patterns.

MAPEI Ultracolor Plus FA for Glass Tile

Ultracolor Plus FA can be used with many compatible glass tile installations, but glass requires some additional consideration.

Some glass surfaces can be sensitive to abrasion.

Some glass is translucent.

Some specialty finishes can be affected by aggressive installation or cleanup methods.

Grout color can also influence how translucent glass appears.

Test the combination when necessary and follow the recommendations of both MAPEI and the glass tile manufacturer.

MAPEI Ultracolor Plus FA for Marble and Natural Stone

Natural stone deserves extra attention during grout selection.

Marble, limestone, granite and other stones vary in porosity, finish and sensitivity.

Certain surfaces may be vulnerable to staining, scratching or pigment absorption during grouting.

MAPEI recommends testing potentially sensitive stone and tile before proceeding with the complete installation.

The stone may also have its own sealing requirements even though Ultracolor Plus FA itself does not typically require a penetrating grout sealer.

Follow the requirements for both materials.

MAPEI Ultracolor Plus FA for Porcelain and Ceramic Tile

Porcelain and ceramic tile make up many of the most common applications for Ultracolor Plus FA.

The grout can be used across everything from mosaics and subway tile to larger field tile when the application and joint dimensions fall within the product requirements.

With larger tile, the grout may play a relatively quiet visual role.

With small ceramic or porcelain mosaics, the grout becomes much more visible.

That is why the same grout color can look completely different depending on the tile format.

Can MAPEI Ultracolor Plus FA Be Used in Swimming Pools?

Ultracolor Plus FA can be used in approved submerged installations when installed and cured according to MAPEI's requirements.

Pool installations require more planning than a conventional backsplash or dry interior wall.

Permanent submersion, pool chemistry, setting materials, waterproofing and cure time all matter.

Follow MAPEI's current requirements for submerged applications rather than assuming the same timing used for ordinary foot traffic applies before filling a pool.

MAPEI Ultracolor Plus FA vs Traditional Cement Grout

Ultracolor Plus FA is cement based, but I would not describe it as basic traditional grout.

Its fine aggregate formulation, rapid-setting characteristics, stain resistance, broad joint range, color consistency and resistance to efflorescence are major reasons people choose it instead of a more conventional cement grout.

It is designed as a modern high-performance grout.

That distinction matters when comparing grout purely by price.

Two cement grouts are not necessarily designed to deliver the same performance.

MAPEI Ultracolor Plus FA vs Sanded and Unsanded Grout

Traditionally, installers often chose grout based on whether the joint required a sanded or unsanded product.

Ultracolor Plus FA takes a different approach.

Its fine aggregate formulation is designed to work across joint widths from 1/16 inch through 3/4 inch.

That makes it an all-in-one alternative for many installations.

It can simplify product selection, particularly when a project contains several tile formats.

Compatibility with sensitive tile surfaces still needs to be verified.

MAPEI Ultracolor Plus FA vs Starlike PRO Epoxy Grout

This is the most useful grout comparison for BELK Tile customers.

MAPEI Ultracolor Plus FA and Starlike PRO are both high-performance grout options, but they use fundamentally different technologies.

Ultracolor Plus FA is a rapid-setting, high-performance cement grout.

Starlike PRO is a two-component epoxy grout.

Epoxy provides characteristics such as very low water absorption and strong chemical and stain resistance.

Ultracolor Plus FA provides a high-performance cement-based system that is familiar to many installers and works across a wide range of tile applications.

Neither product needs to be declared the winner for every project.

Choose based on the tile, environment, installer experience, maintenance expectations and performance you need.

If premium epoxy performance is your priority, browse Starlike PRO Epoxy Grout.

How to Mix MAPEI Ultracolor Plus FA

Ultracolor Plus FA is rapid setting, so preparation matters.

Have the grout joints prepared, tools ready and work area planned before mixing.

Follow MAPEI's current mixing ratio and installation instructions for the package size you are using.

Do not add extra water simply to make the grout easier to spread.

Changing the prescribed mixture can affect color, strength, working characteristics and overall performance.

Because temperature, humidity and jobsite conditions can also influence working time, use the current MAPEI technical instructions rather than relying on a generic grout recipe.

Rapid-Setting Grout Requires Planning

The rapid-setting characteristics of Ultracolor Plus FA can help move a project forward efficiently, but they also mean you should be organized before you begin.

Prepare the tile joints.

Have clean water and the required tools available.

Understand how much area you can reasonably grout and clean within the available working period.

Do not mix more material simply because you have a large area to cover.

Jobsite temperature, humidity and other conditions can affect working and curing times.

Follow the current MAPEI instructions for the actual installation.

How Much MAPEI Ultracolor Plus FA Do I Need?

Grout consumption depends on the tile dimensions, tile thickness, grout-joint width and grout-joint depth.

Square footage by itself is not enough.

A penny-round mosaic contains many more grout joints per square foot than a large-format porcelain tile.

That means two projects covering the same area can require very different quantities of grout.

Use MAPEI's coverage information together with the dimensions of your actual tile and planned grout joint before determining how much grout to order.

Grout Joint Width Matters

Ultracolor Plus FA is designed for a broad range of grout-joint widths, but that does not mean the grout should determine the tile joint by itself.

The tile format, dimensional variation, installation method and applicable standards also matter.

Do not reduce the grout joint simply because the grout can technically work in a narrow space.

Determine the appropriate joint for the tile installation first, then confirm that the grout system supports it.
