BELK Tile ~ Where we are Adding Style to Your Tile!

Mosaic Tile

BELK Tile carries mosaic tile in five materials: glass, ceramic, porcelain, natural stone and marble, with 600+ styles across the five collections combined. Mosaic tile is made of small individual pieces, most commonly pre-mounted on a mesh backing sheet for installation, so an installer sets one sheet at a time instead of placing hundreds of individual pieces. Sheet sizes vary by manufacturer and format (12 by 12 inches is common, but sizes run smaller and larger depending on the product), and a few specialty mosaics ship as loose tile rather than mesh-mounted sheets. The small-piece format works on curved surfaces, tight corners and irregular cutouts that large-format tile can't handle. Use the material links below to shop a specific category, or browse the full mosaic assortment and filter by application, shape, color and price.

What Is Mosaic Tile?

Mosaic tile is tile made of small individual pieces, generally between five-eighths of an inch and two inches per piece. Most mosaic tile is pre-mounted on a mesh backing sheet rather than sold as loose, individual tiles, though sheet dimensions vary by manufacturer, material and shape, and some specialty and hand-set formats are sold as loose tile instead. The mesh-mounted sheet holds each piece at the correct spacing so the installer works sheet by sheet instead of setting individual pieces one at a time. That construction is what makes mosaic tile useful in places large-format tile struggles: it wraps curves, fills irregular cutouts around outlets and range hoods, and creates the high grout-line density that gives shower floors and pool surfaces traction.

Mosaic tile is a format, not a material. BELK Tile carries it in five materials, and the material you choose has more effect on cost, durability and where the tile can go than the mosaic format itself does. The sections below walk through each one.

Shop Mosaic Tile by Material

Glass Mosaic Tile

Glass mosaic tile is the choice for pool tile, light-catching backsplashes and reflective accent walls. It's non-porous, comes in iridescent, beveled, blend and solid-color styles from three manufacturer lines, and requires white thinset during installation. Shop the full glass mosaic tile collection

Ceramic Mosaic Tile

Ceramic mosaic tile is the most budget-friendly of the five materials. It starts at the lowest price point in the collection and covers penny round, crackle-finish hexagon and pattern formats that suit shower floors, kitchen backsplashes and accent walls, with the crackle and hexagon styles working especially well in boho and farmhouse-leaning rooms. Shop the full ceramic mosaic tile collection

Porcelain Mosaic Tile

Porcelain mosaic tile is the most durable of the mesh-mounted materials and the one most commonly rated for floors as well as walls. The collection spans pebble, penny round, waterjet and 3D-textured formats in soft, natural color palettes, making it a strong fit for floors, shower floors and pool surrounds where long-term wear resistance matters most. Shop the full porcelain mosaic tile collection

Natural Stone Mosaic Tile

Natural stone mosaic tile brings texture and variation that manufactured materials can't fully replicate. Tumbled pebble, tessera and waterjet-cut formats in marble and limestone each carry natural veining and color variation, so no two installations look identical. It's the material to reach for when the brief calls for an organic, quarried look rather than a uniform manufactured surface. Shop the full natural stone mosaic collection

Marble Mosaic Tile

Marble mosaic tile is BELK Tile's largest stone mosaic collection and the most design-driven of the five. Hexagon, penny round, waterjet and pebble formats come in Carrara, Calacatta, Emperador and Thassos-based color stories, including several series that blend marble with glass, making it the premium choice for bathroom feature walls, marble shower floors and statement kitchen backsplashes. How to Choose a Mosaic Material

Start with porcelain if durability and low maintenance matter most. Start with glass or marble if the goal is visual impact through light, color or veining. Start with ceramic if budget is the primary driver, since it covers the same shapes at the lowest starting cost. Natural stone and marble both need periodic sealing; glass, ceramic and porcelain do not.

Mosaic Tile Shapes and Formats

Small mosaic pieces let manufacturers produce shapes that would be impractical in large-format tile. The most common shapes appear across multiple materials in this collection:

  • Hexagon: the most common mosaic shape, available in glass, ceramic, porcelain and marble
  • Penny Round: small circular tiles favored for shower floors because of grout-line traction
  • Herringbone: pre-arranged V-pattern sheets, mainly in glass
  • Pebble: tumbled stone pieces, mainly in porcelain, natural stone and marble
  • Waterjet: curvilinear cut patterns, mainly in porcelain and marble
  • Subway: small rectangular mosaic chips, mainly in glass and ceramic

Where Mosaic Tile Works Best

Kitchen Backsplash

Every material in this collection works for a kitchen backsplash, and mosaic's small-piece format makes it easy to install around outlets and range hood cutouts. Glass and marble carry the most visual interest; ceramic and porcelain are the more budget-friendly routes. See the kitchen backsplash tile collection for the full range across all tile types.

Shower Walls and Floors

Porcelain and ceramic penny round are the most common shower floor choices, and natural stone pebble is popular for a spa-like texture underfoot. For any shower floor, prioritize a mosaic with high grout-line coverage and confirm a DCOF wet-traction rating of 0.42 or higher before ordering. Full range at the bathroom tile collection and the shower floor tile collection.

Pool Surrounds

Glass and porcelain carry most of the pool-rated options in this collection, but not every mosaic tile here is pool-rated. Always verify the specific product listing before ordering for a pool application. Browse the pool tile collection for confirmed pool-rated mosaics.

Fireplace Surrounds

Glass mosaic is the standout material for fireplace surrounds because its reflective surface interacts with firelight, though ceramic, porcelain and marble mosaics all work as surrounds too. See the fireplace tile collection for more.

Floors

Porcelain and marble mosaic are the two materials rated for floor use across this collection. Ceramic and glass mosaic are generally restricted to walls and shower floors depending on the specific product. Check the Applications filter on each product page, or browse the floor tile collection.

Mosaic Tile Buying Guide

Confirm Thinset Type Before You Order

Glass mosaic requires white thinset because gray mortar shows through the translucent tile. Ceramic, porcelain, natural stone and marble mosaic generally use standard thinset, but always confirm the manufacturer's spec sheet for the specific product before ordering installation materials.

Back-Butter Every Sheet

Apply a thin layer of thinset to the back of each mesh-mounted sheet before pressing it into the substrate, regardless of material. This eliminates air pockets and matters most in areas with regular temperature swings, like behind a range or on shower walls.

Match Grout Type to Joint Width

Most mosaic joints run under one-eighth of an inch, which calls for unsanded grout, since sanded grout can scratch glass and glazed ceramic surfaces during installation. Check the specific product's joint width before choosing grout.

Add a Waste Factor

Add 10 percent minimum for a standard flat installation, and 15 percent if the layout wraps corners, fills a pool waterline, or requires significant cutting. Order all sheets from the same production run for color consistency, particularly with natural stone and marble.

Seal Stone, Not Glass or Porcelain

Natural stone and marble mosaic tile need periodic sealing to resist staining. Glass and porcelain do not require sealing on the tile face. Grout, regardless of the tile material above it, benefits from a penetrating sealer in any wet application.
