What Is Ceramic Tile?

Ceramic tile is made primarily from clay and other natural materials that are shaped and fired at high temperatures. Many ceramic tiles used for kitchens and bathrooms have a fired glaze that creates the finished color, pattern and surface.

One of ceramic tile's biggest strengths is design flexibility. It can be produced as simple square field tile, elongated subway tile, small mosaics and decorative shapes, with finishes ranging from smooth glossy surfaces to matte, textured, crackle and handmade-look glazes.

For homeowners, designers and contractors, ceramic is particularly useful when you want a wall tile with substantial choices in color, shape and surface character.

Shop Ceramic Tile by Type

The easiest way to narrow the collection is to decide what tile format fits the project.

BELK Tile carries ceramic field tile, subway tile and mosaics, giving you options for both simple surfaces and more decorative installations.

Ceramic Field Tile

Ceramic field tile covers the primary surface of a wall, backsplash or other approved installation.

Square formats such as 4x4 create a traditional grid, while longer rectangular field tiles can create a more directional look.

One reason I like ceramic field tile is the variety of surface character available. A smooth white square can create a clean, simple wall, while handmade-look edges and glaze variation can make the same basic format feel much more organic.

Browse our ceramic field tile collection for square, rectangular and decorative field formats.

Ceramic Subway Tile

Ceramic subway tile uses an elongated rectangular shape that can range from traditional proportions to much longer contemporary formats.

The size changes the visual effect.

Shorter rectangles create more pattern repetition and grout joints. Longer subway tile produces stronger horizontal or vertical lines and generally creates a cleaner surface with fewer joints.

Ceramic is particularly well suited to subway designs because glaze color, surface texture and edge variation can completely change the character of a simple rectangle.

Explore our ceramic subway tile collection for classic and elongated formats.

Ceramic Mosaic Tile

Ceramic mosaic tile uses smaller individual pieces, often arranged on mounted sheets to simplify installation.

Mosaics can introduce significantly more pattern than field or subway tile. Penny rounds, hexagons and decorative shapes are useful for backsplashes, shower accents, niches and other areas where the tile itself is intended to become part of the design.

Some ceramic mosaics may also be suitable for floors or shower floors, but suitability should be confirmed for the individual product.

Browse our ceramic mosaic tile collection to compare shapes, colors and finishes.

Where Can Ceramic Tile Be Used?

Ceramic tile is commonly used for kitchen backsplashes, bathroom walls, shower walls, fireplace surrounds and decorative accent walls.

Some ceramic tile is also manufactured and rated for residential flooring.

The important point is that ceramic is a material category, not a universal application rating. Two ceramic tiles can look similar but have different performance characteristics.

Always check the specifications for the individual product, especially when considering ceramic for floors, shower floors, exterior locations or other demanding applications.

Ceramic Tile for Kitchen Backsplashes

The kitchen backsplash is one of the strongest applications for ceramic tile.

Glazed ceramic provides a practical surface behind countertops and ranges while offering an enormous range of colors and styles.

White and cream ceramic can keep the backsplash quiet. Blue, green, black and earthy colors can turn it into a focal point. Handmade-look and varied glazes add movement without requiring a complicated mosaic pattern.

I recommend choosing the backsplash in relation to the countertop and cabinetry.

When the countertop contains substantial veining or movement, a simpler ceramic tile usually creates better balance. With a quiet countertop, the backsplash has more freedom to introduce color, texture or pattern.

Browse our kitchen backsplash tile collection to compare ceramic with glass, porcelain, stone and other backsplash materials.

Ceramic Tile for Bathroom Walls

Ceramic is a natural choice for bathroom walls because glazed surfaces are relatively easy to maintain and available in colors and formats that work with nearly any bathroom style.

Larger field and subway tiles can create quieter walls with fewer grout joints.

Mosaics and decorative ceramic can be used behind a vanity, inside a niche or on a feature wall when you want more pattern.

The amount of ceramic tile you use is also a design decision. You do not necessarily need to tile every wall from floor to ceiling. Combining ceramic with painted walls can keep the room from feeling overly busy.

Ceramic Tile for Shower Walls

Many glazed ceramic tiles are suitable for shower walls when the individual product is approved for wet-area use.

The tile itself is not the shower waterproofing system.

A properly prepared substrate and waterproofing assembly are required behind the finished tile, and the mortar and grout should be appropriate for the installation.

Do not automatically assume that a ceramic wall tile can also be used on the shower floor. Floor suitability should be confirmed separately for the exact product.

Ceramic Tile for Fireplace Surrounds

Ceramic tile can create a fireplace surround ranging from very traditional to highly contemporary.

Handmade-look, textured and varied glazes can add surface character, while simple field tile can create a cleaner architectural appearance.

Fireplace installations have specific requirements based on the fireplace type and the location of the tile relative to the heat source.

Verify that the particular ceramic tile, substrate and setting materials are appropriate and follow the fireplace manufacturer's requirements and applicable building codes.

Ceramic Tile vs Porcelain Tile

Ceramic and porcelain are related materials, but they should not be treated as interchangeable.

Both are manufactured from clay-based materials and fired to create a hard tile body.

Porcelain meets more stringent standards for density and water absorption. Porcelain tile has a water absorption rate of 0.5 percent or less, which contributes to its suitability for many demanding floor, exterior and wet applications.

Ceramic tile outside the porcelain classification can have a higher absorption rate.

That does not make ceramic inferior. It simply means the application matters.

For a kitchen backsplash, bathroom wall or decorative wall, ceramic can provide tremendous design flexibility without requiring the performance characteristics of porcelain.

For demanding floors, exterior installations and other locations where water absorption and durability are critical, I would compare the specifications of appropriate porcelain products.

Ceramic Tile vs Glass Tile

Ceramic and glass can both work beautifully on backsplashes and walls, but they create different visual effects.

Ceramic is opaque. Its character comes from glaze, color, texture and surface variation.

Glass interacts with light differently and can create greater reflectivity and visual depth, particularly with translucent or iridescent products.

Ceramic often feels warmer and more tactile, especially with handmade-look surfaces. Glass can feel cleaner and more luminous.

Neither is automatically better for a backsplash.

If you want glaze variation, earthy colors or a handcrafted appearance, I would lean toward ceramic. If reflection and light interaction are central to the design, compare our glass tile collection.

Glossy vs Matte Ceramic Tile

Finish changes both the appearance of ceramic and how noticeable everyday marks can be.

Glossy Ceramic Tile

Glossy glaze reflects more light and can make color appear richer.

It is especially popular on kitchen backsplashes and bathroom walls where the reflective surface can help brighten the room.

Glossy surfaces can also make water spots, fingerprints and residue more noticeable depending on the color and lighting.

Matte Ceramic Tile

Matte ceramic reflects less direct light and creates a softer appearance.

I like matte finishes when the design needs to feel quieter or more understated.

Matte does not automatically mean floor rated or slip resistant. Finish and application rating are separate specifications, so check the exact product when selecting tile for a floor.

Handmade-Look Ceramic Tile

Handmade-look ceramic has become an important design direction because it moves away from perfectly flat, completely uniform surfaces.

The tile may have softly irregular edges, slight surface variation and glaze differences from piece to piece.

Those characteristics create movement after installation even when every tile is the same basic color.

White handmade-look ceramic can be especially effective because the surface variation keeps a neutral backsplash from looking flat.

Green, blue and earthy colors can emphasize the variation even further.

The goal with this type of tile is not perfect uniformity. Variation is part of the intended appearance.

What Is Crackle Glaze Ceramic Tile?

Crackle glaze contains fine lines within the glazed surface that create an aged or handcrafted appearance.

The effect can range from very subtle to highly visible depending on the product.

Crackle finishes can be beautiful on backsplashes and decorative walls, but I would not make one universal statement about sealing or wet-area suitability.

Some crackle-glazed ceramic requires sealing or has specific installation and maintenance instructions.

If you are considering crackle glaze for a kitchen, bathroom or shower, follow the manufacturer's recommendations for the exact product.

Choosing Ceramic Tile by Color

Ceramic glaze makes it possible to produce an enormous range of colors, but the surrounding materials determine whether those colors work in the room.

White and Cream Ceramic Tile

White and cream remain popular because they are easy to coordinate with countertops, cabinets and fixtures.

The surface finish determines whether they feel simple or decorative.

A perfectly smooth white ceramic can look clean and contemporary. An irregular handmade-look white glaze can feel warmer and more traditional or transitional.

Blue Ceramic Tile

Blue ceramic can range from pale coastal shades to deep navy and saturated cobalt.

Lighter blues work naturally with white and natural wood, while darker blue creates substantially more contrast.

Blue is particularly effective when glaze variation produces slightly different tones from tile to tile.

Green Ceramic Tile

Green ceramic has become a strong option for kitchens and bathrooms because it works well with natural wood, warm whites, stone and metallic fixtures.

Soft sage creates a quieter palette, while emerald and forest greens can make the tile the focal point.

For additional materials and formats, browse our green tile collection.

Black and Dark Ceramic Tile

Black and dark ceramic creates considerably more contrast.

Glossy black reflects surrounding light, while matte black creates a softer and more architectural surface.

Dark ceramic can work particularly well on a feature backsplash or bathroom wall when the surrounding finishes provide enough contrast.

Choosing Grout for Ceramic Tile

Grout color can either emphasize the tile pattern or allow it to recede.

A grout color close to the tile generally creates a quieter, more continuous surface.

Contrasting grout outlines each individual tile and makes the layout more noticeable.

For handmade-look ceramic with irregular edges, grout width and color can have an especially strong influence on the finished appearance.

There is no universal requirement to seal every grout installation on a fixed schedule. Grout technologies vary, so follow the grout manufacturer's installation and maintenance recommendations.

Installing Ceramic Tile

Ceramic is often easier to cut than dense porcelain, which can make it approachable for backsplash and wall projects.

That does not mean every ceramic installation uses the same setting materials or installation method.

The substrate should be flat, clean and appropriate for the application. Wet areas require the correct waterproofing system before tile is installed.

Mortar, grout, joint size and cutting method should be selected based on the tile and installation-material manufacturers' recommendations.

Layout is also important.

Dry planning the installation before setting tile can help avoid narrow cuts at cabinets, corners, niches, outlets and other highly visible transitions.

Visit BELK Tile's installation guides for additional project guidance.

Does Ceramic Tile Need to Be Sealed?

Most glazed ceramic tile does not require sealing on the glazed face.

However, that does not mean every ceramic product has identical maintenance requirements.

Unglazed ceramic, exposed tile edges and some specialty or crackle-glazed products may have different requirements.

Grout requirements also depend on the grout product being used.

Check the specifications for the tile and grout rather than automatically applying a sealer or following a fixed resealing schedule.

Caring for Ceramic Tile

Routine maintenance for glazed ceramic tile is generally straightforward.

Use a soft cloth, sponge or appropriate mop with a cleaner compatible with the tile and grout.

Avoid assuming that aggressive acidic or abrasive cleaners are safe for every decorative glaze.

Handmade-look, metallic, crackle and other specialty finishes can have additional care requirements.

In showers and bathrooms, regular cleaning helps prevent soap residue and mineral buildup.

The individual product's care instructions should always take priority over general ceramic-tile advice.

Shop Ceramic Tile at BELK Tile

BELK Tile carries ceramic tile for homeowners, designers, builders and tile contractors working on kitchen backsplashes, bathrooms, showers, fireplaces and decorative wall installations.

Start by deciding which format fits the project.

Choose ceramic field tile for primary wall surfaces and square or rectangular formats. Explore ceramic subway tile for elongated rectangular designs, or browse ceramic mosaic tile when you want smaller shapes and more pattern.

You can also compare ceramic with other materials in our complete tile collection.

Whenever possible, order a sample before purchasing the full project. Glaze variation, texture and color can look noticeably different under your room's actual lighting and next to countertops, cabinetry, flooring and fixtures.
