What Is Recycled Glass Tile?

Where Can Recycled Glass Tile Be Used?

Depending on the individual product, recycled glass tile can be used for kitchen backsplashes, shower walls, bathroom walls, swimming pools, fireplace surrounds, accent walls and some floor applications.

The key phrase is "depending on the individual product."

A tile being made from recycled glass does not automatically make it suitable for every wet, submerged, exterior or floor application.

Check the specifications of the exact product before ordering, particularly for swimming pools, shower floors and general flooring.

Recycled Glass Tile for Kitchen Backsplashes

Kitchen backsplashes are one of the easiest places to incorporate recycled glass tile into a project.

Glass itself is non-porous and relatively easy to wipe clean, while the wide range of mosaic shapes gives you considerable design flexibility.

A simple square or subway mosaic can keep the backsplash relatively quiet. Penny rounds, hexagons, herringbone and iridescent designs create more pattern and movement.

I recommend choosing the backsplash in relation to the countertop rather than selecting it independently. A countertop with substantial veining usually works better with a quieter mosaic. A simpler countertop gives you more freedom to introduce color or pattern.

Many recycled glass mosaics work well on shower walls, niches and bathroom feature walls when the specific product is approved for wet-area use.

Glass does not absorb water through its surface, but that does not make the completed shower waterproof. The waterproofing system is behind the finished tile and grout.

Do not assume that a penny round, hexagon or other small mosaic is automatically suitable for a wet floor simply because it creates more grout joints.

These designs work best when the tile is meant to become a focal point rather than simply provide a background surface.

Because the pattern already creates significant movement, consider keeping surrounding countertops, cabinetry and field tile relatively quiet.

Iridescent Recycled Glass Tile

Iridescent recycled glass combines reclaimed glass content with a finish that can appear to shift in color as lighting and viewing angles change.

That makes it especially effective in swimming pools, showers and backsplashes where the surface encounters changing light.

The appearance can be subtle on one product and dramatic on another.

Do not rely only on a product image when choosing iridescent glass. Order a sample and look at it in the actual space under natural and artificial lighting.

The main difference is the source of the glass used to manufacture the tile.

Recycled glass incorporates reclaimed glass into the manufacturing process, while other glass tile may be produced primarily from virgin raw materials.

I would not choose between the two based on an assumption that one is automatically more durable or appropriate for a particular installation.

Recycled glass can be a more resource-conscious material choice because it puts reclaimed glass back into use rather than relying entirely on virgin raw materials.

However, I would avoid treating every recycled glass product as environmentally identical.

Recycled content percentages, manufacturing methods, manufacturing locations and documentation can differ between products and manufacturers.

For a homeowner, recycled content may simply be one factor in the buying decision.

For an architect, designer or commercial project pursuing a particular sustainability standard, documentation becomes much more important. Request the product-specific recycled-content and environmental documentation required for the project rather than relying on a general category claim.

Does Recycled Glass Tile Qualify for LEED Credits?

Recycled content can be relevant to projects pursuing LEED certification, but selecting a recycled glass tile does not automatically award a project a LEED credit.

LEED evaluates the project and applicable materials according to specific requirements and documentation.

If LEED or another green-building standard matters to your project, request documentation for the exact tile being specified, including recycled-content information when available.

This is another reason I do not recommend applying one recycled-content percentage to every product in a broad collection.

Choosing Recycled Glass Tile by Color

Glass can carry color differently than opaque ceramic, porcelain or natural stone.

Light can interact with the surface and, depending on the tile, pass into or reflect through portions of the material.

Blue and Aqua Recycled Glass Tile

Blue and aqua are particularly effective in glass.

They are natural choices for pools and bathrooms but can also create strong kitchen backsplashes.

Soft aqua works well with white and natural wood, while deeper blue can create substantially more contrast.

Green Recycled Glass Tile

Green recycled glass can range from pale sea-glass tones to teal and deeper botanical colors.

Green works particularly well with warm white, cream, natural wood and many stone surfaces.

In bathrooms, softer greens can create a quieter spa-inspired palette, while saturated green can turn the tile into a focal point.

White and Neutral Recycled Glass Tile

White, cream, beige and gray recycled glass allow the reflective characteristics of the material to provide interest without introducing a strong color.

These are particularly useful when countertops, cabinets or surrounding materials already contain substantial pattern.

Multicolor Recycled Glass Mosaic

Multicolor mosaics introduce several coordinated tones within the same sheet.

This can make it easier to connect the backsplash or accent tile to other finishes in the room.

Because a multicolor mosaic already creates considerable visual activity, I usually recommend pairing it with quieter surrounding surfaces.

Choosing Grout for Recycled Glass Mosaic Tile

Grout has a major influence on the appearance of mosaic tile because there are many joints across the installation.

A grout color similar to the tile generally creates a quieter, more continuous surface.

Contrasting grout emphasizes every individual piece and makes the pattern more prominent.

There is no single grout specification that should automatically be used for every recycled glass mosaic.

Glass finishes, joint widths, installation environments and grout technologies vary. Follow the tile and grout manufacturers' compatibility recommendations for the exact products being installed.

Installing Recycled Glass Mosaic Tile

Recycled glass mosaic should be installed according to the requirements of the individual tile and setting-material manufacturers.

Start with a flat, clean and properly prepared substrate. Showers, pools and other wet applications require the appropriate waterproofing or substrate system before the tile is installed.

Many glass mosaics are supplied as mounted sheets. Dry lay several sheets together before installation to check spacing and determine whether the boundaries between sheets disappear into the overall pattern.

A compatible white setting material is commonly specified for translucent and lightly colored glass because darker mortar may affect the finished appearance. Confirm the requirement for the specific product rather than assuming it applies universally.

Does Recycled Glass Tile Need to Be Sealed?

The glass itself generally does not require sealing because it is non-porous.

That does not mean every installation has the same maintenance requirements.

Grout products vary. Some cementitious grouts may have different sealing recommendations than epoxy or other modern grout systems.

If the mosaic combines recycled glass with natural stone or another material, that additional material may also have separate sealing requirements.

Follow the recommendations for the exact grout and materials used rather than automatically applying a sealer to every recycled glass installation.

Routine cleaning is generally straightforward.

Use a soft cloth or non-abrasive sponge with a cleaner appropriate for the tile and grout. Avoid abrasive pads and powders that could scratch or dull the glass surface.

For pools, proper water chemistry and regular waterline maintenance help prevent mineral deposits from obscuring the glass surface.
