What Recycled Glass Tile Mosaic Is
Recycled glass tile mosaic is
glass mosaic tile made from post-consumer reclaimed glass rather than virgin
raw materials. The production process collects glass from the waste stream,
sorts it by color, melts it and casts or presses it into tile. The resulting
product has the same non-porous surface, the same UV stability and the same
light-reflective properties as tile made from virgin glass. Products in this
collection are made with approximately 98 percent recycled glass content.
The sustainability case is
straightforward: glass does not biodegrade in a landfill, so reclaiming it for
tile diverts it from permanent landfill occupancy. The manufacturing process
for recycled glass tile uses less energy than processing virgin silica and
conserves sand, soda ash and limestone. For projects pursuing LEED
certification, recycled glass tile with documented post-consumer recycled
content qualifies for Materials and Resources credits. Contact our team for
product-specific recycled content documentation. For the broader recycled tile
catalog, visit the recycled mosaic
collection.
Tile Formats in This Collection
Iridescent Recycled Glass Mosaic
Iridescent recycled glass mosaic
tile has a color-shifting finish that changes depending on the viewing angle
and light source. The iridescent quality comes from the natural mineral
composition of the reclaimed glass, not from an applied coating, and it holds
up under UV exposure and pool water chemistry without fading. This format is
the most popular in the collection for pool installations, where the tile
interacts with sunlight, underwater lighting and moving water to create a
surface that changes appearance throughout the day. For the full iridescent
tile selection including both recycled and non-recycled options, visit the iridescent glass
tile collection.
Solid Color Recycled Glass Mosaic
Solid color recycled glass
mosaics have a single consistent color across the tile surface with a glossy or
satin finish. These suit applications where the iridescent color-shifting
effect is not the goal, such as kitchen backsplashes where a specific color
needs to stay true under different lighting conditions and bathroom walls where
the tile coordinates with fixed fixture and cabinetry colors. The color depth
in solid recycled glass tile is often slightly richer than in comparable virgin
glass tile because the natural mineral composition of the reclaimed source
glass adds subtle variation within a consistent color tone.
Penny Round Recycled Glass Mosaic
Penny round mosaics are small
circular tiles, typically one inch in diameter, mounted on a mesh sheet. In
recycled glass, the penny round format brings the same nostalgic circular
pattern with the non-porous glass surface and the sustainability story of the
recycled material. The high grout line coverage of the penny round format makes
it practical for wet floor applications including shower floors and bathroom
floors. Verify the DCOF (Dynamic Coefficient of Friction) rating of 0.42 or
higher for wet floor conditions before ordering for any floor application. For
the full penny round selection across all materials, visit the penny round tile
collection.
Hexagon Recycled Glass Mosaic
Hexagon format recycled glass
mosaic uses the six-sided shape that creates an interlocking geometric pattern
across the tile surface. In small sizes, typically one inch per tile, hexagon
mosaics provide good grout line coverage for wet floor applications. In larger
sizes, the hexagon reads as a deliberate geometric design element on walls and
backsplashes. For the full hexagon tile selection across all materials, visit
the hexagon tile
collection.
Where Recycled Glass Tile Mosaic Works Best
Swimming Pools
Glass tile is the most
technically appropriate material for pool surfaces because its extremely low
water absorption rate, below 0.5 percent for vitrified glass, handles constant
submersion, temperature fluctuation and pool water chemistry without degrading.
The iridescent recycled glass mosaics in this collection are among the most
visually effective pool tile options available. Before ordering any specific
product for a pool, verify the pool rating in the product specification. Not
all glass mosaics are rated for full pool submersion. For the full pool tile
catalog, visit the pool tile
collection and the pool blog.
Kitchen Backsplashes
The non-porous glass surface
resists grease and cooking splatter without absorbing anything, cleans with
soap and water, and does not require sealing. Solid color mosaics suit kitchens
where a specific color coordinate is the goal. Iridescent mosaics suit kitchens
where the backsplash is intended to carry visual interest rather than serve as
a neutral background. For the kitchen backsplash tile catalog, visit the kitchen
backsplash tile collection and the backsplash blog.
Shower Floors and Bathroom Floors
Penny round and hexagon format
recycled glass mosaics suit shower floors and bathroom floors because the high
grout line coverage provides traction in wet conditions. Verify the DCOF rating
of 0.42 or higher before ordering for any wet floor application. The non-porous
glass surface does not absorb water on the tile face. The grout lines need to
be sealed after installation and resealed periodically. For shower floor tile
options, visit the shower floor
tile collection and the shower blog.
Bathroom Walls and Accent Surfaces
Recycled glass mosaic on
bathroom walls creates a surface with the non-porous, moisture-resistant
properties of glass in a format that has more visual texture and material
interest than large-format tile. Iridescent options create a color-shifting
surface that looks different at different times of day as natural light
changes. For bathroom design content, visit the bathroom blog.
Installation and Maintenance
White Thinset Is Required
Recycled glass tile, like all
glass tile, requires white thinset mortar rather than standard gray. Glass is
translucent to varying degrees and gray mortar shows through and changes the
finished color of the tile. Specify white thinset explicitly when ordering
materials or briefing an installer. Back-butter each mesh-mounted sheet with a
thin additional thinset layer before pressing it into the substrate thinset.
This eliminates air pockets and ensures full contact.
Unsanded Grout for Standard Mosaic Joints
Mosaic tile joints under
one-eighth of an inch wide require unsanded grout. Sanded grout scratches the
glass surface during installation. Seal the grout after it cures. The glass
tile surface itself does not need sealing.
Waste Factor
Add 10 percent to your square
footage for waste on a standard installation. Move to 15 percent for penny
round and fish scale formats, which require more cuts at the perimeter, and for
pool waterline applications with angled cuts. Measure the installation area in
inches, multiply width by height and divide by 144 for square footage.
