What Is Brick Look Tile?

Brick look tile is ceramic or porcelain tile designed to recreate the appearance of traditional masonry brick. Depending on the collection, the surface may feature weathered color, irregular-looking edges, textured finishes or subtle variations that resemble aged brickwork.

Unlike full-size structural brick, brick look tile is manufactured as a decorative finishing material. It allows homeowners and designers to introduce brick-inspired character into kitchens, bathrooms, fireplaces and other spaces without constructing a traditional masonry wall.

At BELK Tile, our collection includes both ceramic and porcelain options. Some have a strongly rustic appearance, while others provide a cleaner interpretation of the brick shape.

Written by Mike Belk, Tile Expert at BELK Tile.

Why Choose Brick Look Tile Instead of Real Brick?

Traditional brick has undeniable character, but it is not always the most practical material for an interior backsplash or decorative wall.

Brick look tile can provide a similar visual direction in a thinner, more manageable format. Depending on the product, glazed ceramic and porcelain surfaces may also be easier to maintain than exposed, porous masonry.

The important distinction is that brick look tile is not one universal material. Its performance depends on whether the product is ceramic or porcelain, its finish and its manufacturer-approved applications.

For most decorative interior projects, I recommend choosing the visual style first, then confirming the technical specifications before ordering.

Brick Look Tile Collections at BELK Tile

MBC Brick Road Collection

The MBC Brick Road series offers a distinctive interpretation of brick-inspired ceramic tile in an elongated 3 x 10 format.

Designs such as Lombard Street, Maple Street, Old Street, Bourbon Street and Vintage Street provide different color directions within the collection.

The rectangular format creates the familiar proportions of brickwork while allowing you to choose between a traditional running bond layout and more contemporary arrangements.

I particularly like this type of tile when you want the character of brick but prefer a more decorative, finished appearance than exposed masonry.

Rustico Collection

The Rustico Collection emphasizes the weathered, rustic side of brick-inspired tile.

Colors such as Naturally Fresh, Rural Sky, Pastoral Calm, Sylvan Grove and Gardenside create a varied palette for projects where the goal is warmth, texture and a more aged appearance.

Rustico can work especially well in farmhouse, traditional and rustic-inspired interiors. The surface character helps create visual interest without requiring an elaborate installation pattern.

Other Brick-Inspired Designs

BELK Tile also carries rectangular and decorative tile options that can complement a brick-inspired interior, including selected Sential and Malta designs.

These products may have a cleaner surface or a different decorative emphasis than the Brick Road and Rustico series.

For that reason, I recommend comparing the actual product photographs and samples rather than assuming every tile in the collection has the same distressed brick appearance.

Ceramic vs. Porcelain Brick Look Tile

Ceramic Brick Look Tile

Ceramic brick look tile is a popular choice for decorative interior walls.

It can provide rich color, surface variation and the appearance of traditional brick without requiring full masonry construction.

For kitchen backsplashes and feature walls, ceramic offers considerable design flexibility. However, ceramic products vary in water absorption, durability and approved applications.

Do not assume that a ceramic brick look wall tile can also be installed on a floor.

Porcelain Brick Look Tile

Porcelain brick look tile provides another option for recreating masonry-inspired surfaces.

Porcelain is manufactured to have low water absorption, making appropriately rated products useful for a range of interior applications. Some porcelain brick look tiles may also be approved for floors or other demanding environments.

That does not mean every porcelain tile is suitable for exterior installations, shower floors or wet walking surfaces. The finish, slip resistance and individual product specifications still matter.

Brick Look Tile for Kitchen Backsplashes

A brick look kitchen backsplash can introduce warmth and texture into a space dominated by smooth cabinets, countertops and appliances.

The familiar rectangular shape makes it easy to coordinate with traditional kitchen layouts. A running bond installation creates a classic brick-wall appearance, while a stacked arrangement can produce a cleaner, more contemporary result.

Warm brown and multicolor finishes can complement wood cabinetry, cream countertops and rustic fixtures. White and lighter brick look tiles can create a brighter kitchen while preserving the character of the masonry-inspired pattern.

When choosing a backsplash, consider how much movement already exists in the countertop. A strongly patterned countertop may pair better with a quieter brick look tile, while a simple countertop gives a weathered or multicolor design more room to stand out.

Brick Look Tile for Fireplace Surrounds

Fireplace surrounds are a natural place to use brick-inspired tile.

Traditional masonry has long been associated with fireplaces, so brick look ceramic and porcelain can provide a familiar visual direction without necessarily requiring full-size brick.

Brown and weathered finishes can reinforce a rustic or farmhouse appearance. White brick look tile may work better in a transitional space, while darker or more uniform designs can complement contemporary interiors.

However, not every brick look tile is suitable for every fireplace location.

Follow the fireplace manufacturer's clearance and temperature requirements, and verify that the tile, setting materials and substrate are approved for the intended installation. Decorative tile should not be assumed suitable for the interior of a firebox.

Brick Look Tile for Accent Walls

An accent wall is one of the easiest ways to introduce the appearance of exposed brick into a room.

Brick look tile can add texture behind shelving, in an entryway, around a bar or across a living room feature wall. The rectangular shape creates a familiar architectural rhythm, while the selected finish determines whether the result feels rustic or contemporary.

For a strongly textured tile, I generally recommend keeping surrounding wall finishes relatively simple.

This allows the brick-inspired surface to become a focal point without competing with too many other patterns.

Brick Look Tile for Bathroom Walls

Brick look tile can also work in bathrooms, particularly when you want to introduce a material-inspired surface that contrasts with smooth fixtures and countertops.

Lighter colors can keep a smaller bathroom feeling open, while weathered finishes introduce a more rustic character.

On vanity walls and decorative bathroom surfaces, brick look tile can provide texture without requiring an elaborate mosaic.

For shower walls and other wet areas, confirm the selected product is approved for the application. Tile and grout are not substitutes for the waterproofing assembly required behind a shower installation.

Can Brick Look Tile Be Used on Floors?

Some brick look porcelain products are approved for floor installations, but many decorative ceramic options are intended primarily for walls.

A brick-inspired floor can work well in kitchens, entryways, mudrooms and other interior spaces where you want a traditional masonry appearance.

The surface texture, tile thickness, traffic rating and slip resistance all need to be considered before choosing a product.

For bathrooms and other potentially wet walking surfaces, confirm that the exact tile meets the appropriate requirements.

Browse Floor Tile for additional floor-rated options.

Can Brick Look Tile Be Installed Outdoors?

Only when the specific product is approved for exterior use.

Although porcelain generally has low water absorption, exterior performance depends on the complete tile assembly, including freeze-thaw exposure, substrate conditions, installation materials and drainage.

A brick look tile approved for an indoor kitchen floor should not automatically be used on an outdoor patio.

For exterior projects, check the manufacturer's technical documentation and confirm that the installation system is appropriate for the climate and intended location.

Popular Brick Look Tile Colors

Brown Brick Look Tile

Brown brick look tile creates a warm, traditional appearance.

It works especially well with wood cabinetry, cream walls, natural stone and darker metal finishes. Variations in brown, tan and weathered tones can make the finished surface resemble aged masonry.

Explore Brown Tile.

White Brick Look Tile

White brick look tile provides a lighter interpretation of the traditional brick wall.

It can complement farmhouse kitchens, transitional bathrooms and contemporary feature walls. A white finish also allows the rectangular pattern and surface texture to become more noticeable without introducing strong color.

Cream and Neutral Brick Look Tile

Cream and neutral brick-inspired finishes create a softer alternative to traditional brown or red masonry.

These colors coordinate naturally with warm whites, beige countertops, light woods and organic interior palettes.

They are particularly useful when you want the character of brick without creating a dark or visually heavy wall.

Multicolor and Weathered Brick Look Tile

Multicolor brick look tile emphasizes the variation associated with aged masonry.

Rather than repeating one perfectly uniform shade, these designs combine complementary tones that create movement across the installation.

For larger areas, review multiple tiles together to understand how the colors will distribute across the finished surface.

Brick Look Tile for Farmhouse Interiors

Brick-inspired surfaces fit naturally into farmhouse design because they introduce warmth and familiar building-material character.

White and cream finishes can coordinate with painted cabinetry, wood shelving and traditional hardware. Brown and weathered tiles create a more rustic appearance.

The key is balancing the texture with the rest of the room. If the brick look tile has strong color variation, simpler countertops and cabinetry can keep the design cohesive.

Brick Look Tile for Rustic and Industrial Interiors

Rustic interiors often emphasize natural-looking materials, weathered finishes and visible texture.

Brick look tile supports that direction without requiring every wall to be covered in masonry.

Industrial interiors can use the same material differently. Pairing brick-inspired tile with black metal, simple cabinetry and restrained lighting can create a more architectural appearance.

The choice of grout and layout plays an important role in determining whether the finished installation feels rustic, traditional or modern.

Brick Look Tile for Contemporary Spaces

Brick look tile does not have to be limited to farmhouse or rustic interiors.

A more uniform rectangular tile installed in a stacked pattern can produce a clean contemporary surface. Neutral colors and closely matched grout can reduce the visual emphasis on individual pieces.

For a modern kitchen or bathroom, consider pairing the brick-inspired surface with simple cabinetry, uncluttered countertops and restrained fixtures.

This approach allows the tile to provide subtle texture without overwhelming the room.

Brick Look Tile vs. Subway Tile

Brick look tile and subway tile often share similar rectangular proportions, but they are not necessarily the same design.

Subway tile describes a familiar rectangular format that can be smooth, glossy, matte, textured or handcrafted-looking.

Brick look tile specifically emphasizes the visual character of masonry brick. This may include weathered colors, textured surfaces or intentionally aged-looking edges.

A standard subway tile can be installed in a running bond pattern, but that alone does not make it a brick look tile.

Explore Subway Tile for additional rectangular formats.

Brick Look Tile vs. Thin Brick Veneer

Brick look ceramic or porcelain tile and thin brick veneer can create similar appearances, but they are different materials.

Thin brick veneer is typically made from real fired clay brick and retains many of the material characteristics of masonry.

Brick look tile is manufactured as ceramic or porcelain with a brick-inspired appearance. Its surface, water absorption, thickness and maintenance requirements depend on the specific product.

Neither material is automatically better for every project.

The appropriate choice depends on the installation location, desired appearance, substrate and maintenance expectations.

Brick Look Tile Sizes and Layouts

Rectangular brick look tile can create different visual effects depending on its size and installation pattern.

BELK Tile carries brick-inspired formats including elongated 3 x 10 designs and other rectangular options.

Running Bond Brick Pattern

Running bond is the classic staggered arrangement associated with traditional brick walls.

It creates a familiar masonry appearance and works particularly well with weathered or multicolor tile.

Stacked Brick Pattern

A stacked layout aligns the vertical grout joints rather than staggering them.

This creates a more orderly appearance and can make a rectangular brick look tile feel contemporary.

Vertical Brick Layout

Installing rectangular tile vertically changes the visual direction of the surface.

It can be useful on accent walls or backsplashes where you want to emphasize height rather than the traditional horizontal brick pattern.

Herringbone Brick Pattern

Some rectangular tile formats can be installed in a herringbone arrangement, depending on their proportions and manufacturer recommendations.

Herringbone introduces stronger movement than a conventional running bond layout.

Before selecting this pattern, confirm the tile dimensions, planned cuts and installation requirements.

Choosing Grout for Brick Look Tile

Grout color can significantly change the appearance of brick-inspired tile.

A contrasting grout emphasizes the rectangular shape and creates a more traditional masonry-like pattern. Closely matched grout produces a quieter surface and places greater attention on the tile's color and texture.

Warm gray and neutral grout colors can complement many weathered brick finishes, while white or cream grout may work well with lighter tiles.

Always follow the manufacturer's recommended joint width and grout specifications.

Textured surfaces may require additional care during grouting to prevent residue from becoming trapped in surface details.

Installing Brick Look Tile

Brick look tile installation begins with proper substrate preparation and layout planning.

Before setting the tile, dry-lay several pieces to evaluate the color variation and determine how the pattern will align around corners, cabinets and other architectural features.

For weathered or multicolor designs, mixing pieces from different boxes can help distribute the variation naturally.

Use setting materials appropriate for the tile material and installation location. Follow the manufacturer's recommendations for joint spacing, movement accommodation and curing.

For wet areas, use the required waterproofing assembly rather than relying on the tile or grout to provide waterproofing.

Cleaning and Maintaining Brick Look Tile

Maintenance depends on the material and finish.

Glazed ceramic and porcelain are generally cleaned with compatible nonabrasive products. Textured brick-inspired surfaces may require a soft brush or additional attention to remove residue from recessed areas.

Avoid aggressive cleaning products unless they are approved by the manufacturer.

For kitchen backsplashes, regular cleaning can help prevent grease and cooking residue from accumulating on textured surfaces.

Grout maintenance is also important because the joint pattern is a prominent part of the finished brick appearance.

How to Choose the Right Brick Look Tile

Start with the installation location.

For a kitchen backsplash or decorative wall, appearance may be your main consideration. For bathroom walls, confirm moisture compatibility. For floors, choose a product approved for the expected traffic and wet-use conditions.

Next, consider how much texture and color variation you want.

The MBC Brick Road series provides one interpretation of rectangular brick-inspired tile, while Rustico emphasizes a more weathered visual character. Comparing samples can help you decide which direction works best with your space.

Finally, review the grout color and installation pattern before ordering. Both decisions can noticeably change how the finished wall or floor looks.
