A shower floor needs a slope of roughly 1/4 inch per foot toward the drain so water does not pool on the surface. Because the slope is built into the tray at the factory, this system removes the guesswork of hand-forming a slope and is generally considered more approachable for a DIYer or an installer newer to shower construction.

Pre-sloped trays come in standard sizes and shapes, with some flexibility for drain placement, but they offer less on-site customization than a hand-built mud pan for unusual shower dimensions.
