Electric vs. Hydronic Radiant Systems
Electric radiant systems use resistive cable or mats installed directly under the tile, while hydronic systems circulate heated water through tubing, usually embedded in a concrete or self-leveling underlayment layer. After the underlayment has cured, test the system a second time before setting any tile. This confirms nothing was damaged during the underlayment pour and gives you a final opportunity to catch a problem before it is covered by tile and grout.
Step 5: Set the Tile
Use a modified thinset confirmed compatible with radiant heat systems, since some thinset products are not rated for the repeated heating and cooling cycles a radiant floor goes through. Apply with a notched trowel and set tile as you would over any substrate, taking care not to drag trowel edges or tile corners forcefully enough to damage what is beneath the underlayment.

Step 6: Grout and Wait Before Turning on the Heat
Let the thinset cure fully before grouting, then let the grout cure fully before turning the heating system on for the first time, following the manufacturer's specific waiting period, often one to two weeks total from tile setting to first use. Turning on the system too early can cause cracking as the thinset and grout cure under thermal stress rather than at a stable temperature.
