Does LVT Flooring Need to Acclimate Before Installation?

Some LVT and luxury vinyl plank flooring needs to acclimate before installation, while other products may have different requirements. The correct answer depends on the flooring construction, manufacturer, storage and transportation conditions, and the temperature of the installation area.

The mistake I would avoid is assuming that every rigid core floor can be installed immediately after it arrives.

SPC flooring is known for dimensional stability, but that does not eliminate the need to follow the installation instructions for the actual product you purchased.

Other flooring products can have different requirements, so the manufacturer's instructions should always take priority over a generic rule you find online.

What Does It Mean to Acclimate Flooring?

Acclimation means allowing flooring to spend a specified period in or under the conditions of the space where it will be installed before installation begins.

The purpose is to allow the flooring and jobsite conditions to reach the state required by the flooring manufacturer before the planks are locked or adhered into their final position.

The exact procedure can vary.

Depending on the product, instructions may address:

• Length of acclimation
• Room temperature
• Flooring temperature
• Jobsite conditions
• How cartons should be stored
• Whether cartons should remain closed
• How flooring should be positioned during acclimation
• Conditions before, during, and after installation

This is why "leave the flooring in the room for a day" is not a complete acclimation instruction for every product.

Does All LVT Need to Acclimate?

No single acclimation requirement applies to every LVT or LVP product.

Luxury vinyl flooring is a broad category that includes different core constructions, installation systems, backing materials, and manufacturing specifications.

A flexible glue-down LVT product and a rigid core SPC click-lock plank should not automatically be expected to have identical jobsite requirements.

Even two SPC floors from different manufacturers can have different instructions.

Always check the installation guide for the exact flooring you are using.

Does SPC Flooring Need to Acclimate?

It depends on the SPC flooring.

SPC stands for stone polymer composite and describes the dense rigid core used in many modern luxury vinyl floors.

The core provides good dimensional stability, but "dimensionally stable" does not mean "ignore the installation instructions."

Some SPC flooring requires acclimation. Other SPC products may have different procedures depending on jobsite and transportation conditions.

Why Does Vinyl Flooring Need to Acclimate?

Flooring materials can be exposed to very different conditions before they reach your room.

Think about the path a carton can take. It may move through a warehouse, delivery truck, garage, jobsite, and finally a climate-controlled interior.

Those environments can have different temperatures and conditions.

Following the required acclimation procedure gives the flooring the opportunity to reach the conditions specified for installation rather than going directly from transportation or storage into the finished floor.

How Long Does LVT Need to Acclimate?

There is no universal number of hours that applies to all LVT.

You may see 24 hours, 48 hours, or other recommendations discussed online. Those numbers should not replace the requirements for the flooring you actually purchased.

If the installation instructions say 24 hours, use 24 hours and follow any accompanying temperature or storage requirements.

If another product requires a different procedure, follow that procedure.

For Arvora LVT, the specified acclimation period is 24 hours.

How Do You Acclimate LVT Flooring?

Start with the installation instructions for the flooring.

A general process may include bringing the flooring into the installation environment and maintaining the required jobsite conditions for the specified period.

But do not assume how the cartons should be arranged, opened, stacked, or stored.

Those details can vary by manufacturer.

I recommend checking four things before starting:

• Required acclimation time
• Required temperature range
• Required carton storage method
• Required jobsite conditions before, during, and after installation

Should You Open the Boxes While LVT Acclimates?

Follow the manufacturer's instructions.

Do not automatically open every carton because someone told you flooring "needs to breathe."

Likewise, do not automatically leave everything sealed if the product instructions specify another procedure.

The correct storage and acclimation method depends on the flooring system.

Should You Stack Vinyl Plank Flooring During Acclimation?

Again, use the product instructions.

The way cartons are stored can affect how evenly they experience the surrounding conditions.

If the manufacturer specifies how cartons should be positioned or stacked, follow those directions rather than creating your own method.

Flooring should also be stored in a way that protects the planks and locking edges from physical damage.

Can You Acclimate LVT in a Garage?

A garage is not automatically the same environment as the interior room where the flooring will be installed.

An unconditioned garage can experience substantial temperature changes compared with the finished living space.

If the flooring requires acclimation to jobsite conditions, storing it in a significantly different environment may not satisfy that requirement.

Use the conditions specified by the flooring manufacturer and make sure the installation area itself is ready.

Can You Acclimate LVT in the Room Where It Will Be Installed?

When the manufacturer requires the flooring to acclimate to installation conditions, the intended installation environment is generally the logical place to do it, provided the room meets the required conditions.

The important part is not simply the room name. The environment needs to meet the flooring manufacturer's requirements.

A kitchen in the middle of an unconditioned construction project may not yet have the same conditions it will have when the home is occupied.

What Temperature Should the Room Be?

Use the temperature range specified by the flooring manufacturer.

I would not substitute a universal temperature range here because flooring systems can have different requirements.

Also pay attention to whether the required conditions must be maintained before, during, and for a period after installation.

Acclimation is not simply about starting a timer. The environmental conditions during that timer matter.

What Happens If You Do Not Acclimate Vinyl Plank Flooring?

If a flooring product requires acclimation and that requirement is ignored, the installation begins under conditions outside the manufacturer's instructions.

That can increase the risk of flooring movement or installation-related problems as the material and jobsite conditions change.

Potential flooring issues can have multiple causes, so I would not automatically blame every gap, joint problem, or movement issue on acclimation.

Subfloor preparation, locking-system engagement, perimeter spacing, temperature, moisture conditions, installation technique, and other factors can also contribute.

The simplest approach is to follow the acclimation requirement from the beginning and remove one unnecessary variable.

Can LVT Acclimate for Too Long?

Leaving flooring in a properly conditioned environment longer than a minimum acclimation period is not the same as ignoring storage requirements.

If the flooring will remain at the jobsite for an extended period, it still needs to be stored according to the manufacturer's instructions and protected from unsuitable temperatures, moisture, physical damage, and construction activity.

Do not assume that once the minimum number of hours has passed, storage conditions no longer matter.

Does Click Lock LVP Need to Acclimate?

The fact that flooring uses a click-lock system does not determine its acclimation requirements.

Click lock describes how neighboring planks connect. Acclimation requirements relate to the flooring construction and manufacturer's installation specifications.

A click-lock SPC floor can still require acclimation.

Does the Wear Layer Affect Acclimation?

The wear layer and acclimation describe different characteristics of the flooring.

A 22 MIL wear layer tells you the thickness of the protective layer above the printed visual. It does not tell you whether the flooring needs 24 hours, 48 hours, or another acclimation procedure.

Does Flooring Thickness Determine Acclimation Time?

No universal rule says that a 5mm, 6mm, or thicker luxury vinyl floor automatically needs a specific number of acclimation hours.

Total thickness is one construction specification. Acclimation requirements are established for the particular flooring system.

Should You Acclimate Flooring Before or After Subfloor Preparation?

I would plan the job so the installation environment and subfloor are ready before flooring installation begins.

Acclimating the flooring does not correct a subfloor that is dirty, uneven, unsuitable, or outside the product's moisture requirements.

While the flooring is going through its required acclimation period, make sure the rest of the project is ready as well.

Check the subfloor, plan the layout, identify transition locations, review the installation instructions, and make sure you have the correct tools and trim.

Do You Need to Acclimate Flooring Before Installing Over Concrete?

The flooring's acclimation requirements still apply when installing over concrete.

But concrete introduces another issue: the slab itself must satisfy the flooring manufacturer's moisture and installation requirements.

Do not confuse flooring acclimation with concrete moisture testing. They address different parts of the installation.

A carton that has acclimated properly does not make an unsuitable concrete slab acceptable.

What Should You Do During the Acclimation Period?

I would use the time to prepare for the installation rather than simply wait for the clock to run out.

This is a good time to:

• Review the installation instructions again
• Inspect the subfloor
• Correct approved subfloor issues
• Verify jobsite conditions
• Plan plank direction
• Measure the room
• Calculate first and final row widths
• Identify transition locations
• Confirm you have the required tools
• Make sure coordinating trim is available

Arvora LVT Acclimation Requirements

The Arvora LVT Collection provides a good real-world example of why I recommend checking the actual flooring specifications rather than relying on a blanket rule about SPC.

Arvora is a rigid core flooring system with a 5mm SPC core and 1mm attached IPXE pad for 6mm total thickness. It uses a Unilin Angle/Drop locking system for no-adhesive click installation.

Even with that dimensionally stable SPC construction, the flooring has a specified 24-hour acclimation period.

That is the requirement I would follow.

Acclimation Is One Part of a Good Installation

Acclimation gets a lot of attention because it can be reduced to a simple question: "How many hours?"

But a good flooring installation involves much more.

The subfloor needs to be properly prepared. Concrete moisture requirements need to be addressed. The layout needs to be planned. The locking joints need to be engaged correctly. Required perimeter space needs to be maintained. Transitions need to be planned.

Acclimation is one piece of that system.
