What Brushed Gunmetal Tile Is and What It Does
Gunmetal refers to a dark,
slightly warm gray-black metallic finish. In tile, brushed gunmetal has a
directional surface texture from the brushing process that creates a matte
sheen, catching light differently when viewed from different angles. The three-dimensional
formats in this collection add an additional layer of surface movement: each
tile piece has a raised or faceted face that creates shadow variation and gives
the mosaic surface a sculptural quality that flat tile cannot produce.
The design effect of brushed
gunmetal tile is bold without being colorful. It creates significant visual
weight and presence on a surface while staying within the neutral palette of
grays and near-blacks. For spaces with dark cabinetry, black or dark gray
countertops, matte black fixtures or an industrial design direction, gunmetal
tile creates material coherence. For high-contrast applications where the
design pairs the tile against very light surroundings, it creates a striking
focal point. For more dark-toned tile options, visit the black tile
collection and the gray tile
collection.
Applications
Kitchen Backsplash
A brushed gunmetal tile kitchen
backsplash is a deliberate design statement. It pairs most naturally with dark
or two-tone cabinetry, matte black fixtures and dark stone or concrete
countertops. In a kitchen where the rest of the palette is light, a gunmetal
backsplash creates a strong focal point that anchors the room. Avoid strongly
acidic cleaners near the metal surface. Clean with mild soap and water. For the
full kitchen backsplash catalog, visit the kitchen
backsplash tile collection.
Bathroom Feature Wall and Accent Strip
A bathroom feature wall in
brushed gunmetal tile creates a surface with dramatic visual weight behind a
freestanding tub or floating vanity. The dimensional tile face interacts with
bathroom lighting to create a surface that reads differently at different times
of day. As an accent strip within a neutral tile field, gunmetal creates a
material contrast that reads as intentional without dominating the room. For
bathroom design content, visit the bathroom blog.
Fireplace Surround
Brushed gunmetal tile on a
fireplace surround creates a surface where the dark metallic material and the
dimensional texture both interact with firelight. The shifting light of the
flame creates moving shadow patterns across the dimensional tile surface that
amplify the dramatic quality of the material. For fireplace tile content, visit
the fireplace blog.
Installation Notes
Substrate and Thinset
Standard thinset mortar is
appropriate. For three-dimensional mosaic formats, ensure the substrate is
particularly flat and level, as dimensional tile is less forgiving of substrate
variation than flat tile. Back-butter each sheet with a thin additional thinset
layer before pressing into place.
Grout
Use unsanded grout for joints
under one-eighth of an inch. Dark gray or charcoal grout suits the gunmetal
finish and allows the tile surface to read as a continuous dark metallic field.
Medium gray grout creates visible joint definition within the dark tile. Either
approach is valid depending on the design direction.
Cleaning
Clean with a soft cloth and mild soap and water. Dry after cleaning.
Avoid abrasive scrubbers and harsh chemical cleaners. The brushed surface
texture can trap cleaning residue in the grain if not rinsed thoroughly.
