Why Aluminum Mosaic Tile Works in Contemporary Spaces
Aluminum tile has a silver tone
that reads as cooler and more neutral than copper and lighter than gunmetal. It
does not demand the design attention that a warm copper or a dark gunmetal tile
does, which makes it useful in spaces where the overall composition already has
strong elements and the backsplash or accent wall needs to contribute material
richness without competing for visual focus. In kitchens with stainless
appliances, chrome or brushed nickel fixtures and white or gray cabinetry,
aluminum mosaic tile creates material coherence across the space without
requiring any additional design coordination.
Aluminum is also lighter than
steel and stone tile, which makes it practical for wall applications where
substrate load is a consideration. The material does not corrode under normal
kitchen and bathroom conditions. For contemporary style tile across all
materials, visit the contemporary
style collection and the modern style
collection.
Applications
Kitchen Backsplash
Aluminum mosaic tile on a
kitchen backsplash creates a surface that reads as deliberately architectural.
The silver tone amplifies task lighting without the warm color cast of copper.
The mosaic format creates more visual texture than a flat field tile at the
same color. For the full kitchen backsplash catalog, visit the kitchen
backsplash tile collection.
Range Hood Surround and Feature Strips
A strip of aluminum mosaic tile
around a range hood, between the hood and the surrounding backsplash field
tile, creates a material transition that reads as intentional. The same
treatment works as a horizontal accent band within a bathroom shower surround
or as a border around a fireplace opening.
Accent Walls
A full accent wall of aluminum
mosaic tile in a living area or commercial space creates a surface with
significant reflective quality that changes with the ambient light conditions
of the room. For accent wall design ideas, visit the tile talk blog.
Installation Notes
Thinset and Back-Buttering
Standard gray or white thinset
mortar is appropriate for aluminum mosaic tile. Apply thinset to the substrate
with a notched trowel and back-butter each mesh sheet with a thin additional
thinset layer before pressing into place. Allow full cure time before grouting.
Grout
Use unsanded grout for joints
under one-eighth of an inch wide. Light gray or medium gray grout suits
aluminum tile without creating a color conflict with the silver metal finish.
Seal cementitious grout after curing.
Cleaning
Clean aluminum mosaic tile with
a soft cloth and mild soap and water. Dry after cleaning to prevent water
spotting on the metal surface. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners and abrasive
scrubbers.
