Choosing Bathroom Tile by Area

Every surface in a bathroom asks something different of its tile. Matching the right tile to the right zone is the single biggest factor in how well your bathroom performs over time, not just how it looks on day one.

Shower Walls

Shower walls face constant moisture, so porcelain and glass are the strongest performers here. Both are non-porous, resist mildew, and hold up to daily cleaning without staining or fading. Larger-format tile means fewer grout lines to maintain in a wet environment, while mosaic sheets work well for niches, borders, and curved surfaces. Browse our full shower wall tile collection to compare options.

Shower & Bathroom Floors

Floor tile has one requirement that wall tile doesn't: slip resistance. Look for a DCOF (Dynamic Coefficient of Friction) rating of at least 0.42, which is the standard benchmark for wet-area safety. Textured or matte finishes grip better underfoot than glossy ones, and smaller-format tiles like mosaic, penny round, or pebble add more grout lines per square foot, and more grout lines mean more traction on a shower floor specifically.

Bathroom Walls & Backsplashes

Walls outside the direct shower spray, like around a vanity or as a bathroom backsplash, have more room for aesthetics over pure performance. Glossy ceramic and glass reflect light and help a smaller bathroom feel larger, while patterned or textured tile makes a strong accent wall without the durability demands of a wet zone.

Bathroom Tile by Material

Ceramic

Ceramic tile is the most affordable and widely available option, easy to cut and install, making it a solid choice for walls and lighter-use floors. It's available in the widest range of colors and patterns of any material on this page.

Porcelain

Porcelain tile is denser and less porous than ceramic, standing up to heavy use and constant moisture, which makes it the top choice for shower walls and floors. It's also available in finishes that convincingly mimic natural stone or concrete.

Glass

Glass tile is completely non-porous and highly resistant to staining, making it a strong choice for shower walls and accent areas. It reflects light well, which is especially useful in smaller or windowless bathrooms.

Mosaic

Mosaic sheets — in glass, porcelain, or natural stone, are the go-to choice for shower floors, niches, and curved surfaces where a single large tile can't easily conform. The higher grout-line density also improves slip resistance underfoot.

Natural Stone

Natural stone — marble, travertine, and slate, brings a one-of-a-kind look to a bathroom, but requires sealing before grouting and periodic resealing afterward to resist moisture and staining. Best suited for walls and lower-splash areas rather than shower floors.

Popular Bathroom Tile Styles

Subway tile remains the most versatile layout for bathroom walls, working in a classic stacked bond or an eye-catching herringbone pattern for more visual interest. Hexagon tile is a strong choice for bathroom floors, offering better slip resistance than large-format tile thanks to its higher grout-line count. Zellige-look and handmade-look tile bring texture and character to accent walls, and penny round mosaics remain a timeless choice for shower floors.

Popular Bathroom Tile Colors

White is the most popular bathroom color, reflecting light and pairing with any fixture finish. Gray offers a versatile neutral for both warm and cool palettes. Black tile has grown fast in modern and minimalist bathrooms, while blue and green bring a coastal or organic feel to a spa-style space.

How to Choose Slip-Resistant Floor Tile

Slip resistance is the most important performance factor for any bathroom or shower floor, since the surface is wet every time it's used.

  • Check the DCOF rating. A rating of 0.42 or higher meets the accepted standard for wet-area flooring.
  • Choose texture over gloss. Matte, honed, and textured finishes grip better underfoot than polished or glossy surfaces.
  • Go smaller for showers. Mosaic, penny round, and pebble formats add more grout lines per square foot, and grout lines improve traction.
  • Match floor-rated tile on walls if you want continuity. Floor-rated tile can be used on walls, but wall-rated tile is often too thin or too slippery to use safely on a floor.

Installation & Care Tips

  • Waterproof before you tile. Shower walls and floors need a waterproofing membrane or backer board rated for wet areas, tile alone is not waterproof, grout lines and hairline cracks will let moisture through over time.
  • Use the right adhesive. Glass tile requires a white or light-colored thinset, since a dark adhesive can show through the tile surface and affect the finished color.
  • Seal natural stone before grouting. Unsealed stone will absorb grout haze and stains permanently. Reseal every 12-24 months in wet areas.
  • Re-seal grout annually in showers. Grout is porous. A yearly sealant application in high-moisture areas prevents mildew growth and staining.
  • Clean glass and porcelain with a non-abrasive cleaner. Avoid abrasive powders on glass tile, since they can dull the reflective surface over time.
